Homophobic or Christian Eunuch?

One way of characterizing the attitudes about homosexuals by the church and gay rights proponents is to see them as holding opposing views with little to no hope of settling their differences. The church that believes that the scriptures are without error can point to the many places where homosexuality is called sinful or a curse in the Bible. Bible-believing Christians often take the stance, “the Bible says it, I believe it and that settles it”. On the other hand, gay rights proponents believe that homosexuals are intrinsically gay. They are born as homosexuals or lesbians. Since their sexual preference is intrinsic it is fundamentally mean-spirited and wrong to demonize what is natural. They liken it to demonizing a person for having been born black or handicapped. “It’s sin.” “I was born gay.” Will the shouting ever stop? Is there a way of reconciling the two sides?

I blame the church mostly for this impasse. God never calls something sin without providing a way of escaping from that sin. Christians having been comfortable damning sinners without offering them any hope for release. We have done this because our faith is primarily a powerless faith that focuses only on living good lives and getting to go to heaven. We have none of the power that Jesus and his disciples demonstrated. We cannot discern and defeat evil spirits. We believe that deliverance from evil only happens in old movies or on the pages of scripture but is no longer appropriate for our time. We are spiritual eunuchs who in an attempt to be true to some of the scripture have to be anti-gay. I believe that God would have us be pro-power and offer hope instead of condemnation to those caught in the snares of the spirit of homosexuality.

We know that if someone doesn’t want to go to hell that there are thousands of churches and millions of Christians who can lead them to Christ. All Bible believing Christians believe that those people who make Jesus Lord of their lives will live eternally with him in heaven. What would the discussion about homosexuality look like if every Bible-believing church operated in power to deliver people from all-ensnaring sin? What if at every corner homosexuals could get set free? What if we could say, we hate the sin, love the sinner but love him so much that we’ll help set him free of his sin?

Christians, renounce your powerlessness. Seek God and his power to heal and deliver. Seek God not to elevate yourself but to offer hope to all those ensnared by demonically empowered sin. Set free the drug addicts, the pornography addicts, the homosexuals, the sex addicts, the gambling addicts, the alcoholics and so on. Don’t be eunuchs but powerful men and women of God who are advancing the kingdom of God.
